| "My art has always been an extension of my love of
nature. I was born in Sausalito in 1961 to parents who loved the outdoors
and its inhabitants, notably birds. They frequently took my sisters and
me to remote areas where we'd camp, hike, backpack, watch and learn about
the birds animals and natural processes. At home we adopted a multitude
of live animals, often injured. Our house was a menagerie and I was in
love with all things wild.
Birdwatching in the Pacific Northwest filled my adolescence and sparked
early renditions in pen and ink, pencil drawings and watercolors. I went
to the University of California at Santa Cruz and studied biology and
natural history, and then volunteered for the Point Reyes Bird Observatory.
I graduated from Humboldt State University where I studied natural sciences
and art, emphasizing my interest in scientific illustration/representational
drawing.
I moved to Southern Oregon where I spent eleven years as a seasonal biologist,
working and living in the Siskiyou Mountains, observing wildlife. During
the six month plus off-season I concentrated on my artwork, drawing and
painting, sculpting soapstone and clay, some of which I have turned into
limited edition bronze casts.
I began drawing birds and animals as a child. My bronze and soapstone
sculptures are my way of keeping their images close at home, a snapshot
of their essence captured to appreciate often, while the live creatures
roam free. They bring me joy and peace which I love to share with others."
