Field-Run Series

From early spring through fall I spend my days atop a roaring tractor working grain fields. I weave up, down, and across the fields, churning and smoothing the soil. Over and over the earth opens and closes, the marks and patterns a silent code, a short-hand revealing stories of what was and what will come to be. These are the marks that adorn the surfaces of my pots. They are the stories from the earth.

I am the recorder.

The "Field Run Series" of tableware is made from a white earthenware clay body. Each piece is either hand thrown on a potters wheel or hand built using rolled clay slabs, forms, hand cutting or pinching techniques. While the clay is leather hard, selected areas are brushed with a black slip. Once the slip is dry, each piece is hand carved using tiny metal carving tools. When complete, it is left to dry. Once it is bone dry, it is fired to l99l degrees. After the first firing, colored slips are brushed on those pieces that will have color, and then, all pieces are covered with a clear, high gloss glaze and fired a second time to 1680 degrees.

All work is functional and designed to be used. It is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. However, I do not recommend daily dishwasher use since I am unfamiliar with the detergents and do not know how they may affect the high gloss surface over time.
