Andrew Johnston is a contemporary realist painter depicting everyday and often overlooked places. Whether it be an outdoor market in San Francisco's Chinatown or a lonely farmhouse overlooking the sea, his paintings dramatically capture the essence of a scene through his effective use of color, light, and shadows. His approach to subject matter often involves the combination of impressionism and realism resulting in both a nostalgic yet contemporary interpretation of the subject. Though mainly self-taught, the 34 year old former financial analyst credits much of his success to studying with Colorado artists Jane Jones and Randy Pijoan, and aspiration from the work of Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. His work is in collections throughout the West including the Bear Creek Corporation in Medford, Oregon. He was a guest on Jefferson Public Radio, and a featured artist in the February 2001 issue of Southwest Art Magazine.
